Flag Fen 2025 - The Battle of Ringmere 1010 AD
The show at Flag Fen this year depicted the battle of Ringmere(1010 AD)
It was fought between the Anglo-Saxons, led by Ulfcytel Snillingr, the ealdorman of East Anglia, and a Danish Viking force under the command of Thorkell the Tall. Despite Ulfcytel’s reputation for bravery, the battle resulted in a decisive Viking victory. According to Norse sources, including the Jómsvíkinga saga and poetry by Sigvat the Skald, the English were “cut down at Ringmere Heath.”
This defeat allowed the Danes to plunder East Anglia extensively, burning towns and monasteries—including the famous abbey at Ely. The battle highlights the ongoing struggle of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms to fend off increasingly organized and aggressive Viking incursions during the early 11th century
See bellow the fantastic photos of the battle and some brilliant close ups of some of our warriors, taken by the amazing Florence Bond (https://www.flickr.com/photos/olivia-bond/)
